Well-being and school climate

Well-being and school climate !

Student well-being is a top priority at the Lycée Français de Shanghai. From preschool to high school, the school implements a range of measures to foster a calm and positive school climate, prevent situations of distress, and support every student in their personal and academic development.

Students as Active Participants in School Life

At Shanghai French School, students play an active role in school life and contribute to a positive school climate.

Several councils and initiatives allow them to get involved :

  • Class representatives – who speak for their classmates and take part in group life.
  • Middle School Council and High School Council – where elected students propose and carry out projects to improve school life.
  • Eco-delegates – who lead awareness-raising actions on sustainability and respect for the environment.
  • Peer mediators in primary school – who help resolve everyday conflicts between students.
  • Student committees (catering, transportation, projects, etc.) – where elected students participate in discussions with educational teams and parent representatives.

These initiatives help develop students’ sense of responsibility, listening skills, and cooperation.

Prevention and action against bullying

Preventing bullying and intimidation is a constant commitment of the school.
Several measures are in place across both campuses :
  • Trained resource teams are available on each campus to support students facing distress or bullying.
  • The pHARe program – France’s national anti-bullying program for schools.
It aims to raise awareness among students, train educational staff, and support schools in preventing and addressing bullying situations.
  • The Safe Zone system allows students to report a situation and receive support in complete confidentiality.

Students and families also have access to several channels to seek help or report a situation :

Throughout the year, the school organizes awareness activities on key issues for students: respect among peers, social media use, empathy, and cyberbullying prevention.

Every year, our “Non au Harcèlement (NAH!) – No to Bullying” student ambassadors hold awareness days built around hands-on, educational activities..

The Shared Concern Method

To address situations of bullying between students, the Lycée Français de Shanghai uses the Shared Concern Method (MPP), developed by the ReSIS Centre. This educational method is based on a non-blaming approach aimed at :
  • Taking students’ suffering seriously.
  • Securing the situation.
  • Constructively fostering student responsibility.
  • Restoring a peaceful school atmosphere.

Our staff are trained to recognize signs of distress and to support students in a respectful and confidential manner.

Support resources for students

Several professionals and services support students on a daily basis :

  • educational teams
  • CPEs (student welfare and guidance staff)
  • school nurses
  • school psychologists

These resources provide support tailored to students’ needs, whether related to health, well-being, or personal difficulties.

Purpose‑built student areas

Living spaces within the school are regularly designed and adapted with input from students to meet their needs.
These include :
  • common rooms and relaxation areas
  • collaborative workspaces
  • recreational spaces with games and activities
  • clubs and activities during break times

These facilities help make the school a pleasant place to live and learn, where students can study, interact, and unwind.
