At Shanghai French School, we have a range of programs to help non-French-speaking families feel at home in the French education system. One key initiative is FLSco, our intensive two-year French language program, which provides close support for children learning French, and their parents.
Many parents ask: “How can I follow my child’s progress in a system I don’t know? How can I help with homework in French?”
These concerns are completely normal. That’s why our FLSco teachers don’t just guide students, they also support parents. A child’s success depends on strong home support, and confident, engaged parents make a huge difference.
Getting Started Even Before the Start of the School Year
For families enrolled for the next school year, we organize a guide session in June.
Families visit classrooms and common areas, and we explain how the French system works, showing comparisons with other international curricula like the IB or A-Levels. It’s a friendly space to ask questions — including about FLSco in both primary and secondary school.
« I didn’t know much about the French system and was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up. The back-to-school workshops really reassured me, and now I feel like I’m genuinely part of my daughter’s learning journey. »
French Classes for Parents
Throughout the year, we offer French courses designed specifically for non-French-speaking parents. Lessons focus on practical skills: school vocabulary, homework support, and communicating with teachers.
These weekly classes are held on both campuses and are very popular, last year over 100 parents participated. The year ends with a warm ceremony in June, where parents receive their certificates of completion.
« I decided to start learning French to get closer to my daughter. Every Wednesday, I am fortunate to be able to come to school, spend time with her, and then we each go to our respective classes. (Laughs) »
Back-to-School Workshops
At the start of the school year, FLSco teachers run workshops to help families get off to a great start. This year, five workshops welcomed enthusiastic parents ready to support their children.
Topics include:
Parents’ role at Shanghai French School
We firmly believe that children thrive when parents are involved. That’s why we invest as much in supporting parents as in supporting students.
Our goal: every family, whatever their language background, feels welcomed, supported, and fully part of our international school community.
